Goats Cheeses Playa Blanca is playing host to a week of Cheese and Wine Tastings, starting on Friday 10th February. As part of an initiative to stimulate the gastronomic trade this event is being organised jointly by the Cabildo of Lanzarote and Saborea Lanzarote. Whilst a second Leisure and Gastronomy Fair is taking place in Tias this weekend too.

Package Holidays Tourist spending on Lanzarote rose during the last quarter of 2011 to the highest level recorded during the last five years. The average spend per person per day on Lanzarote between October and December was €114.68.

The town of San Bartolomé has just inaugurated a new route through its historic centre, with sign posts erected to highlight the many examples of colonial architecture it possesses. San Bartolomé is one of the oldest inhabited parts of Lanzarote, with evidence of a settlement on the site dating back to the 1300´s.

Lanzarote News :: Secret of Jellyfish Swarms Revealed

The recent spate of jellyfish swarms in the coastal waters around Lanzarote may well have been caused by a rise in the temperature of the sea and the drier weather conditions caused by climate change. Over the last two months, numerous beaches have had to be closed to bathers as a result of hundreds of stinging jellyfish washing up on the shore.

The hotel Occidental Oasis in Costa Teguise is about to close its doors for six months in order to have a complete make-over. Approximately eight million Euros is due to be spent on improvements to the rooms, common areas and the exterior of the hotel.

Lanzarote News :: Ryanair Threaten To Cut Canary Island Routes

The budget airline Ryanair has threatened to cut some of its existing routes to the Canary Islands in light of possible subsidy cuts under consideration by the Minister for Energy, Industry and Tourism in the Spanish Government. At present, airlines flying to the main Canary Island airports receive a tax subsidy as an incentive to maintain their routes.

Lanzarote News :: Orzola Beach Closed By Jellyfish

Once again a swarm of jellyfish has caused the closure of beaches, as the northern town of Órzola saw its Playa la Canteria off limits to bathers yesterday. This is the third such incident to occur in the last two months and the return of the purple stinging jellyfish is causing some concern for the tourist industry.

Lanzarote News :: Tourist Centres See 9% Rise in Visitor Numbers

Cueva de Los Verdes, Lanzarote Lanzarote's main tourist attractions, the Centres of Art, Culture and Tourism, saw more than 2.63 million visitors pass through their doors during 2011. This constitutes a rise of 9.34% in comparison with figures collated for 2010.
