The island of Lanzarote has rapidly emerged as a very popular dive destination and is earning a growing reputation as one of the most attractive sub-aquatic locations in the whole of Europe.

Little wonder really, as the same volcanic activity that has shaped the surface of Lanzarote has also had an enormous impact underwater, creating some incredible dive sites, characterized by dramatic rock formations.

Here, beneath the surface, lie lava rivers, caves and arches — the black volcanic rock contrasting sharply with intense white sand and clear blue water.

Add a couple of large reefs and a marine conservation site, stir in a shipwreck or two, finish with an abundance of exotic sea life and you have the recipe for a perfect diving holiday.

Lanzarote also has the advantage of comfortable year round water temperatures, excellent underwater visibility and a diversity of dive sites to suit all levels. As a result, dive schools proliferate on the island.

Best Dive Sites in Lanzarote

So just to, ahem, whet your appetite, here is a quick preview of a few of the best dive spots.

The Cathedral

The Cathedral is a large underwater cave, lying at a depth of around 30 metres, just off the coast at Playa Chica in Puerto del Carmen.

It has alcoves of incredible finger coral as well as other soft corals that inhabit the caves walls. The Cathedral is also home to schools of Grouper and the beautiful Trumpet Fish.

The Harbour Wall

Whilst Puerto del Carmen bustles after dark you can’t beat the nearby Harbour Wall for really colourful nightlife. Well, according to night divers anyway.

Here you can encounter cuttlefish, sea horses and octopus along the harbour wall as well as fields of anemones below.

This is also an excellent daytime dive as the harbour area plays host to an abundance of marine species.

Punta Tiñosa

This fascinating spot lies in-between Puerto del Carmen and the marina at Puerto Calero. Starting at around 12 metres down lies a reef formed from a cascade of lava into the sea, creating rippling contours and spectacular undersea patterns that can be followed down to a depth of some 30 metres.

Blue Hole

The Blue Hole is a spectacular dive spot that lies at a depth of 14 metres. It is around 3 metres wide and runs through a reef, which then drops sharply on the Atlantic side to 35 metres. Here divers can encounter barracuda, grouper and angel shark.
