Although Lanzarote has had a golf course for nearly 30 years, it has not been well known for the sport. With a number of new courses in the pipeline and an enviable year round climate, that is about to change.

Information about golfing in Lanzarote

The dry climate in Lanzarote does not naturally lend itself to the creation of lush green golf-courses.

This is a shame as the perfect year round weather would allow golf to be played at times when it is not possible elsewhere — at least not without some disomfort.

The advent of de-salination plants, which produce abundant water straight from the atlantic means that it is now, possible to produce the rich growth of grass needed for a top-class course.

This important fact, coupled to the desire of the Cabildo to take tourism much more upmarket in Lanzarote, has allowed for additional golf courses to be planned and constructed.

New Lanzarote Golf Courses in Construction

There are a number of new golf courses in the planning or construction stages.

Puerto del Carmen Golf Course

The most advanced is the course just outside of Puerto del Carmen on the road to Tias. This golf course is just off the main road which means that it is within easy reach of the luxury marina of Puerto Calero.

As with most new courses in Spain, there will also be a development of golf property around the course. Most of these plots have already been sold off, but no doubt many will change hands before the properties are complete.

Golf at Montaña Roja, Playa Blanca

A further course is at the very start of construction at the south of Lanzarote, in the resort of Playa Blanca.

This course will be on the edge of the resort close to the new development of Faro Park, which has large, luxurious villas to serve the golfer, as well as a number of top-class hotels, such as the Natura Palace.

Puerto Calero Golf

Although it is close to the new course at Puerto del Carmen, it is hoped that there will eventually be a golf course built next to the luxury marina of Puerto Calero.

This may well be some way off, so for now you will need to visit the existing course at Costa Teguise.

Existing Lanzarote Courses

Costa Teguise Golf Course

The first course on the island, Costa Teguise Golf was opened in 1978 and provides a splendid setting at the foot of an inactive volcano.

It is a championship course and offers a good standard of golf in a very pleasant environment.

Whether Costa Teguise will maintain it’s top slot when the other courses open for business, remains to be seen.

A Healthy Future

What is certain, is that the choice for the avid golfer who wants to play all year round, is only going to improve.

It has to be said, that the future of Golf in Lanzarote, looks quite healthy.
