Searching for good value villas in Lanzarote? There´s plenty of options available in Playa Blanca, the resort based at the southern tip of the island. With self-catering villa accommodation starting from around £450 per week.

Puerto Chico 1

The garden at Puerto Chico 1
This two storey villa in Playa Blanca offers exceptionally good value accommodation, as it can sleep up to eight people and is available from £550 per week.

Its location on the Puerto Chico complex means that the beach at Playa Flamingo is only a few minutes walk away, whilst there is a large shared swimming pool on site. The apartments and houses are set amongst mature palm trees and tropical planting, with the private garden in front of Puerto Chico 1 shaded by a Brazilian pepper tree and a tall Washingtonia palm.

The interior of the property has been furnished to provide comfortable surroundings for holidaymakers, with an open-plan kitchen-living room on the ground floor that opens out onto the terrace. There is also one bedroom equipped with twin beds on the ground floor and a bathroom.

Upstairs, there is a further twin room, a double bedroom and a room fitted with bunk beds, plus bathroom. A utility room on the ground floor provides washing facilities, whilst the kitchen comes with a dishwasher and oven for those who prefer self-catering. Although with several restaurants only a short stroll away, the option to eat out is equally tempting.

La Graciosa is often referred to as the eighth Canary Island. And with just 600 inhabitants, no roads and some seriously impressive beaches this arid little island is certainly a great destination for both day trippers and holiday makers alike.

Harbour with Famara cliffs behind

La Graciosa already features on the itineraries of many Spanish and German visitors to Lanzarote. And it´s a firm favourite with holiday makers from other Canary Islands, including Lanzaroteños. But many British tourists usually opt to explore the larger neighbouring island of Fuerteventura instead. As there are no organised tours actively marketed to visitors from the UK.

Typical house in Caleta del Sebo

But don’t let that put you off. As it´s simple to get to La Graciosa under your own steam and the island is well worth the visit. Thanks to the hugely impressive backdrop of the Famara massif which looms sentinel like above La Graciosa. And an underdeveloped and relaxed feel that is reminiscent of Spain in the 1970´s when tourism was first taking off.

Getting There

Ferry at Orzola
Ferries to La Graciosa run every day from the small port at Orzola in the north of the island. It is possible to get there by public bus but most visitors take their hire car which can be parked close to the ferry port.

It isn´t possible to book tickets in advance. So visitors can simply turn up on the day, book their ticket and hop on. Allow around 10 minutes before departure. The cost of a return journey is €20 for adults and €11 for children.

The journey time is approximately 15 minutes and the ferries hold around 120 people. During the summer months (from July 1st) the service operates to the following timetable.

Orzola to La Graciosa

10.00 12.00 13.30 17.00 18.30

La Graciosa to Orzola

08.00 11.00 12.30 16.00 18.00

The ferries dock in the harbour and capital of the island Caleta del Sebo. Which is the only inhabited town on the island and home to all 600 local inhabitants.

Harbour at Caleta del Sebo

A second ferry service is scheduled to start operating from July onwards. Plans are also afoot for a catamaran excursion which will be based in the harbour at Caleta del Sebo.

Lineas Romero also operates a water taxi that collects and returns from Arrieta and Punta Mujeres for €15 return. Visit the Lineas Romero website for more information

Getting Around

Jeep Taxis

Jeep safaris
There are no proper roads on La Graciosa, only dirt tracks. So transportation is by 4×4 taxis only. Which can be found right by the harbour. These will take you on an island tour, which lasts around one hour, costs €40 (per jeep, not per person) and takes in all of the main sites. Note that the ride can be quite bumpy.

Alternatively the 4×4 drivers will transport you to the beach of your choice and pick you up at a pre-arranged time for €20.

To pre-book a taxi contact Miguel Guadalupe on (0034) 606 741 175 or email him at miguelsafarigraciosero@hotmail.com

Water Taxis

Visit any of the islands beaches or beauty spots by boat by water taxi for just €8 per person. Available daily in the harbour area at Caleta del Sebo.

Mountain Bikes

Can be hired for €10 per day from one of two shops, both of which are easily found in the harbour area at Caleta del Sebo.

It´s well worth noting that much of the terrain on the island is made up of soft sand so even mountain bikes can find it heavy going.

Walking

Road to Playa Francesa
Many day trippers just turn up and head off to either the right or left of the port where there are beaches and coves to explore. Although the best beaches – such as Playa de las Conchas are a good 5km from the port.

There´s very little shade on the island thanks to the fact that there are no palms or trees outside Caleta del Sebo. So anyone planning a longer trek should note that this can be very arduous – not least as the island can be very hot in the summer months. There are no shops or bars outside of the capital either so take plenty of water.

Beaches

Beach at Playa La Concha
La Graciosa´s beaches are the islands biggest attraction – and rightly so. As spots such as Playa de las Conchas and Playa de la Cocina rival anything in the Canaries for beauty. And are often devoid of other people – especially outside of the main summer holiday months.

There´s a nice little beach right next to the ferry port which is very inviting but some locals advise against swimming here. As it is located within the backwash of both the ferry and other diesel driven boats that service the island. Which has apparently resulted in a number of local children suffering eye and throat infections.

Keep walking on from here and head in the direction of Playa El Salado and Las Piconas which are just ten minutes further on. Or head a little further for the beaches at Playa Francesa and Playa de la Cocina.

Turning right from the ferry port there´s plenty of little bays and small bays which are ideal for a dip.

Beach at Playa La Concha

The daddy of them all though is Playa de las Conchas. Often deserted during the morning and with great views out to the other islands that comprise the rest of the Chinijo Archipelago along with La Graciosa. Namely Montaña Clara, Alegranza and Roque del Oeste. If you only have time to visit one beach head for this one.

Places To Eat

Café Meson de la Tierra
Caleta del Sebo is home to all seven of the island’s restaurants. The most atmospheric is Cafe Meson La Tierra – which is just to the left of the ferry port and enjoys great views of the brightly coloured fishing boats moored in the harbour and the Famara massif. They serve a good value menu del dia every day of the week except Sundays for just €7.50. Along with well presented tapas dishes.

El Marinero is regarded by many locals as the best restaurant on the island, serving fresh fish and meat dishes. But on the downside it lacks outdoor seating and views. Located in the road running behind the main harbour. Telephone (0034) 928 842070.

Places To Stay

Casa Mas o Menos is British owned and enjoys some spectacular views from a shady terrace across El Rio to Lanzarote. Available for short or long term lets. Contact (0034) 619 694 601 for bookings and more information.

Fancy trying your hand at speaking the language when on holiday in Lanzarote? Then check out Part 2 of our bluffers guide to speaking Spanish. Covering everything you need to know about hiring a car and touring the island.

Hiring a Car in Lanzarote

Car hire in Lanzarote starts from around €15 per day. And provides one of the best ways to tour the island and see everything that Lanzarote has to offer. The size of the island makes it easy to visit the main attractions in Lanzarote within the space of a few hours. All of the resorts have several car hire companies to choose from, with attractive rental deals for a wide variety of motors.

In order to hire a car, you will need to have a current driving licence, be over twenty-one years of age and will normally be asked to leave a cash deposit or your credit card details. In addition, you will probably be asked to show your passport.

The first thing to remember is that in Spain and the Canary Islands they drive on the right hand side of the road. Outside of the resorts, driving is often a pleasure as the roads are reasonably quiet and there are plenty of interesting places to visit.

Main Roads and Speed Limits

The main motorway in Lanzarote, the LZ2, links Playa Blanca, Puerto del Carmen and Costa Teguise to the capital of Arrecife and the airport. When driving from Puerto del Carmen to Costa Teguise, you need to take the ‘circunvalación’ which is the bypass that goes round Arrecife. This is signposted just after you pass Deiland shopping centre and has a left-hand exit off the dual carriageway.

The LZ2 has the only section of dual carriageway on the island, running between Tias and Arrecife and this has an upper speed limit of 100kilometres per hour. The vast majority of roads on the island have a limit of 80kmph, except in urban areas where speed limits range from 20 to 50 km.

Getting Lost and Asking For Directions

If you’re lost and need to ask directions, you can say, ‘Disculpa’ – ‘Excuse me’, ‘estamos perdidos’ – ‘we´re lost’. ‘Nos puede ayudar?’ – ‘Can you help us?’

To ask directions whilst you are out and about, the easiest way is to say ‘Donde está Timanfaya?’ (where is Timanfaya?). Or you can say ‘está correcta para Jameos del Agua?’ – ‘is this right for the Jameos del Agua?’

When the reply is ‘coja la próxima a la izquierda’ it means you need to take the next left. ‘Coja la próxima a la derecha’ is the next right turn. If you are told to ‘coja la segunda a la izquierda’ that will be the second turning on the left.

‘Siga todo recto’ is ‘drive straight on’. ‘A la redonda’ is ‘at the roundabout’, so if you are told to take the next right at the roundabout this is: ‘coja la derecha a la redonda’.

If you need to turn back or change direction, that is a ‘cambio de sentido’ or ‘da una vuelta’.

Petrol Stations

Whilst you are driving around you will probably need to refuel. Most of the garages on Lanzarote have petrol pump attendants, so you can ask them to fill the tank until it is ‘lleno’ (this is pronounced yey-no). Virtually all the hire cars on the island run on unleaded, which is ‘sin plomo’.

Meeting The Guardia Civil

If for any reason you are stopped by the Guardia Civil or the Policia Local, they will ask to see your licence, which is ‘carnet’ in Spanish. It is important to wear your seat belt whilst out and about, even if you are a passenger in the back, as the authorities are clamping down on this. The word for seat-belt is ‘cinturon’.

Other helpful tips

When Spanish drivers are approaching a zebra crossing and someone is crossing the road, they will slow down and use an indicator to let drivers behind know there is a pedestrian in front of them.

The best flight deals and the latest flight news. Where can you find the cheapest return flights to Lanzarote this summer? We´ve scoured the net to reveal the deals. Along with all of the latest news from the airlines.

Cheap Summer Flights to Lanzarote

Contrary to expectations there are still plenty of well priced return deals available to the island this summer. In mid July for example Monarch are offering returns from London Gatwick to Arrecife airport, priced at £169.42, including taxes. Whilst during August the airline are offering outward flights from Luton from as little as £36.35 on Thursday 6th, which could be paired with a return to Gatwick on the 17th at £100.54 – a total price of £137.19 including taxes.

Elsewhere Monarch is also offering some very attractive deals out of Manchester in mid-August. With return flights available from as little as £61.80. Depart Manchester on Thursday 13th at 09.10 for just £39.25. With the return departing Arrecife on Thursday 20th at 14.55 for just £22.25.

Returns from Glasgow for the same dates are currently available from just under £180 with Thomson Flights and from Edinburgh for £190 with flythomascook. Whilst Monarch are offering the best returns out of Birmingham for those same dates, albeit at a pricier £273.09.

Miami To Tenerife Route Takes Off

Advance sales on the new Air Europa Miami to Tenerife route, which commences operations on June 20th, have exceeded expectations. With around 70% of all seats sold for the first month.

The new route is operating on Saturdays – departing Tenerife North at 13.25, arriving in Miami at 16.45 local time. And leaving Miami at 18.45 local time, arriving at Tenerife at 07.35. With tickets priced at €565 return.

Such is initial demand that airline bosses are now considering extending the route beyond October this year and into April 2010.

Lanzarote Flight Searches Down 18%

Flight comparison company cheapflights.co.uk has reported an 18% fall in the number of searches made on their website for flights to Lanzarote in recent weeks. Other islands in the Canaries have also been hit – with flight searches for Tenerife down by 45%.

Whilst by no means representative the figure for Lanzarote is certainly in line with the recent decreases recorded in overall visitor numbers to the island.

Possible Monarch Strike Action Threat

Flights to Lanzarote booked with the low cost operator Monarch face possible disruption this summer. As around 700 cabin staff consider voting for possible industrial action in a ballot scheduled for July – in response to the company’s refusal to grant pay rises.

Pay talks between Monarch and Unite, the cabin staffs union, broke down recently. Raising the spectre of possible walk outs at major airports such as Luton, Gatwick, Birmingham, Manchester, Edinburgh and Dublin during the peak summer season.

According to Brian Boyd of Unite: “The firm faces a crippling strike at the height of the holiday season. The requests of our members are reasonable and are in line with similar negotiations with other industry operators. There is no doubt the aviation sector is experiencing difficult times, all the more reason for Monarch to work with Unite to find a practical solution to this dispute.”

Whilst a Monarch spokesperson was reported as stating:” Given the current economic situation and its impact on the aviation industry, pay increases and additional benefits for employees are unachievable at the present time. Monarch senior management continues to work with the cabin crew trade union to resolve this matter as quickly as possible in the interests of its customers and all other employees.”

Low occupancy levels are spurring many leading Lanzarote hotels to offer discounted deals this summer. With reductions of up to 30% available on bookings made before the end of this month.

Lanzarote has a rich artisanal tradition, as islanders have long utilised local materials in numerous inventive ways to create everything from musical instruments to baskets.

Here we take an in-depth look at the range of handmade articles you can find at local markets and in selected shops around the island. Many of which make ideal holiday souvenirs.

Embroidery

Feria Insular
A tradition that is just as popular in the Canary Islands as in mainland Spain, embroidered tablecloths, anti-macassars and doilies can be found for sale at the Artisan Market in Haria on Saturday mornings, amongst other places.

Tinwork

This handicraft involves using sheets of tin to create anything from weathervanes to mirror surrounds, candle-holders and decorations. Originally, local craftsmen would have made such items from brass as this was easier to source than tin. However, with the rise of packaging that uses tin, there has been a similar rise in the number of products made from recycling this metal.

Carpentry and Wood Carving

Despite the lack of trees on Lanzarote, there are plenty of carpenters working in wood, whether that is making the wooden doors and window frames that adorn most houses or more specialised items such as souvenirs. In fact, the craftsmen who work in the latter field are considered wood-carvers, rather than just carpenters, as their skills lie more in the decorative aspects of this trade.

Timples

The Canary Islands have their very own version of the guitar, with a miniature version called the Timple. It produces a sound similar to a ukulele and has five strings. Some are made from cedarwood, whilst others may use walnut. The timple is one of the principal instruments used in Canarian folklore music.

Barrel Making

This particular skill has obviously been of extreme importance to the island’s many Bodegas, for the storing of their annual wine harvest. Whilst many of the Bodegas now use galvanised metal containers for the maturation process, the wooden casks are still used for their aesthetic appeal in restaurants and bars.

Weaving

Entrance to the tapas bar
The handicraft of loom-weaving is still practised by a few individuals on Lanzarote. For the best example of this craft, visit the Museo del Campesino, where a full size loom is set up in one of the workshops.

Rugs and large pieces of cloth are made by the dexterously weaving the shuttle between the threads stretched out on the loom’s frame. In the past, camel wool was used for this purpose.

Jewellery

Items for personal adornment are just as much as staple of the arts and crafts here as in most countries. The main difference being that much of the jewellery made here is created from olivine, the semi-precious light green stone found on the island, and black volcanic basalt that has been sanded down until it is smooth to the touch.

Pottery

Examples of the local style of pottery can be seen at the Museo del Campesino and at Haria Market. The earthenware pots, jugs and dishes are often fired in clay ovens in the ground and owe much stylistically to the pottery made by the indigenous Mahos who inhabited the island at the time of the Spanish conquest.

Palm Weaving

Finding a use for the dried leaves of the Canarian palm are the basket weavers who still produce goods of various shapes and sizes. Examples can be seen at the Museo al Campesino as well as in various individual workshops, several of which are based in the northern villages of Punta Mujeres, Haria and Maguéz.

Where to Buy

Artesania Lanzarote
The best places to track down some of the locally made handicrafts are:

Haria Artisan Market
Saturday am from 10.00 until 14.30 in the Plaza de Haria.

Museo Del Campesino

Fancy taking in more than just the one Canary Island when on holiday in Lanzarote? There´s plenty of scope for exploring the other major islands that make up the Canarian archipelago – both by boat and by plane.

Lanzarote to Fuerteventura

Coastguard at Las Dunas National Park
As neighbouring islands that are only separated by a narrow strait, travel between Lanzarote and Fuerteventura is very easy.

Fuerteventura is a larger island although its population is less than half that of Lanzarote’s. The capital is Puerto Rosario, a relatively new town on the south-eastern coast, although older villages, such as Betancuria, Antigua and Pájara, retain much of their original charm.

Considerably more arid than Lanzarote (if that is possible), the landscapes of Fuerteventura are very similar to the southern half of its neighbour, with less scenic variety. Fuerteventura’s main attractions are its incredible beaches, including the Dunas National Park just outside Corralejo and the white sands of Jandia, in the south.

The ferry journey takes only half an hour and there is a scheduled service from Naviera Armas that runs every two hours from Playa Blanca, starting at 07.00 in the morning. A day trip with small hire car would cost €89.38 for two people on Naviera Armas. Fred Olsen also run a service with their Bocayna Express which takes only twenty minutes. A return two day journey to Fuerteventura with a car would cost €109.60 on Fred Olsen.

Lanzarote to Gran Canaria

Reservoir in Gran Canaria
Gran Canaria is a much bigger island, with a population of approximately one million people. The capital, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, is well worth a visit as it has a colonial heart full of history. For instance, Christopher Columbus stayed here before embarking on his travels to discover the New World and quite fittingly there is a museum dedicated to his epic journey.

The island is considerably more mountainous and is also greener than either Lanzarote or Fuerteventura, especially in the north. The southern coastal area has been extensively developed for tourism.

Travelling by ferry to Gran Canaria from Lanzarote is a lengthy journey of seven hours – for two adults taking a small hire car for a four night stay, the cost is €282.30 with Naviera Armas.

Alternatively, a flight between the islands with Binter Canarias would cost €155.70 return per person.

Lanzarote to Tenerife

Las Cañadas - Tenerife
Tenerife is the largest of the seven islands and is also home to Spain’s highest mountain, Mount Teide, at 3718 metres above sea level. The island offers distinct contrasts in landscapes, with the southern half hotter and drier, whilst the north is cooler and greener.

Visitors can even enjoy skiing and beach action on the same holiday, thanks to this varied topography. Much of the southern coastal area has been developed for package tourism, whilst the northern half is home to numerous boutique hotels and fincas.

Return flights to either Tenerife North or South with Binter Canarias cost from €199.70. The flight time is fifty minutes. If a slower journey is preferred, the ferry between Lanzarote and the port of Santa Cruz in the north of Tenerife takes around eleven hours. For two people visiting Tenerife for five days, the return ferry crossing costs €181 with Naviera Armas.

Lanzarote to La Gomera

La Gomera
The island of La Gomera is just south-west of Tenerife and boasts mountain ridges, lush forests and pretty, untouched towns and villages. Thanks to the fact that there are no direct flights from European destinations, it is a haven for rural tourism.

There are no direct ferries between Lanzarote and La Gomera. In order to get to La Gomera by boat, it is necessary to change ferries at Los Cristianos in the south of Tenerife, but there are services running every day (if somewhat limited at the weekends). A trip between Tenerife and La Gomera for two days and two adults would cost €92.62 for a return journey with Naviera Armas, including ferry bus.

Lanzarote to La Palma

Caldera de Taburiente - La Palma
La Palma is a much more verdant island than its neighbours. The landscapes of the island are dominated by the volcanic activity that created the Caldera de Taburiente, a huge crater in the northern half of the island.

There are numerous extremely lush valleys surrounded by high mountainous ridges and the island boasts the greatest variety of flora in the archipelago. The ferry doesn’t operate on a regular service between Lanzarote and La Palma at present.

Visitors can get a connecting flight service between Lanzarote, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and La Palma, which takes two hours and thirty-five minutes, with a return journey via Tenerife. This costs around €406 on Binter Canarias for two people travelling to La Palma for four nights.

Lanzarote to El Hierro

Landscape - El Hierro
As the most outlying and smallest island in the archipelago, El Hierro is known for its rugged landscapes, with steep cliffs that conceal a gentler interior, populated with smaller hills and ancient woods.

As with the other Canary Islands, the waters surrounding El Hierro are excellent for dive enthusiasts. There is currently no ferry service available between Lanzarote and El Hierro.

Flights to El Hierro go via Tenerife with the quickest connecting flights taking approximately two and a half hours. A four night round trip to El Hierro from Lanzarote costs just under €398 for two people.
