Surfs up all year round on Lanzarote for beginners of all ages. As the island offers an ideal environment for anyone interested in learning to surf. Thanks to the same volcanic activity that has shaped Lanzarote´s surface terrain. Providing the perfect conditions for riders of all levels of experience.
The Canary Islands are often referred to as the Hawaii of the Atlantic. As these two archipelagos share both a volcanic origin and ideal conditions for surfers.
And Lanzarote is one of the favourite spots for both professional riders and board packing beginners alike. As the same volcanic activity that has shaped the island’s surface terrain has also impacted on the coastline and seabed. With hot lava meeting cooler water to create 20 plus reefs around the island. So ensuring that water breaks with force and height – the sort of conditions that surfers crave. An effect amplified further by the fact that as an island Lanzarote has no continental shelf – which usually acts as a drag on wave power.
Learning to Surf on Lanzarote
There´s no shortage of surf schools on Lanzarote. But there are few that match the passion and dedication to surfing and its wider culture than Surf Paradise, run by Frenchman Seb Hugon and based in Costa Teguise.
Rather than coaching large groups Surf Paradise prefer to concentrate on maximum group sizes of just eight people. Enabling them to give an intensive level of one on one training that produces results fast – with the vast majority of new students up and riding within just a couple of hours.
Their philosophy also extends to imbuing new riders with a broader knowledge about the sport – encompassing video tutorials on wave, current and wind conditions, the history of surfing and an insight into surf culture. In an attempt to get them as close to the real spirit and feeling of surfing as possible.
Rather than always heading for the same surf spot regardless of that days weather conditions the team at Surf Paradise instead check daily to select the optimum location. Ensuring that students get to enjoy the best possible weather conditions available.
And their passion extends to Lanzarote itself – as they are keen to immerse students in the islands natural beauty – explaining sights and scenery as they head off for a days surfing at some of the most picturesque locations on the island, such as Arietta and Famara.Surf camp students on week long courses are even able to enjoy a sunrise or sunset surfing session with the Surf Paradise team as part of their overall experience.
Family Fun
The common perception of surfing is that it’s the sole domain of sun bleached males. But Seb Hugon is keen to stress that surfing is in fact a fun day out for all ages. And is entirely safe for young students from the age of 7-8ys upwards. With Surf Paradise providing special lightweight soft foam training boards – as well as wetsuits and all other equipment.
A typical day out with Surf Paradise lasts for around six hours and costs €50 for adults and €45 for children. The lack of price differential between the two is explained by the fact that children in fact require far more one on one tuition than most adults in the early stages.
The cost of a days surfing also includes all transportation, equipment and lunch on the beach that has been selected for that day’s session.
