Miami To Tenerife Route Takes Off
Advance sales on the new Air Europa Miami to Tenerife route, which commences operations on June 20th, have exceeded expectations. With around 70% of all seats sold for the first month.
The new route is operating on Saturdays – departing Tenerife North at 13.25, arriving in Miami at 16.45 local time. And leaving Miami at 18.45 local time, arriving at Tenerife at 07.35. With tickets priced at €565 return.
Such is initial demand that airline bosses are now considering extending the route beyond October this year and into April 2010.
Lanzarote Flight Searches Down 18%
Flight comparison company cheapflights.co.uk has reported an 18% fall in the number of searches made on their website for flights to Lanzarote in recent weeks. Other islands in the Canaries have also been hit – with flight searches for Tenerife down by 45%.
Whilst by no means representative the figure for Lanzarote is certainly in line with the recent decreases recorded in overall visitor numbers to the island.
Possible Monarch Strike Action Threat
Flights to Lanzarote booked with the low cost operator Monarch face possible disruption this summer. As around 700 cabin staff consider voting for possible industrial action in a ballot scheduled for July – in response to the company’s refusal to grant pay rises.
Pay talks between Monarch and Unite, the cabin staffs union, broke down recently. Raising the spectre of possible walk outs at major airports such as Luton, Gatwick, Birmingham, Manchester, Edinburgh and Dublin during the peak summer season.
According to Brian Boyd of Unite: “The firm faces a crippling strike at the height of the holiday season. The requests of our members are reasonable and are in line with similar negotiations with other industry operators. There is no doubt the aviation sector is experiencing difficult times, all the more reason for Monarch to work with Unite to find a practical solution to this dispute.”
Whilst a Monarch spokesperson was reported as stating:” Given the current economic situation and its impact on the aviation industry, pay increases and additional benefits for employees are unachievable at the present time. Monarch senior management continues to work with the cabin crew trade union to resolve this matter as quickly as possible in the interests of its customers and all other employees.”
