Guided Tours on the Canary Island of Lanzarote

Following the Steps of César Manrique

A full day dedicated to the work of the late great, multi-talented man who has left his mark all over Lanzarote. We begin at the Monumento al Campesino, in the centre of the island. Manrique designed this in honour of the farmer's hard work today and in centuries past. We then proceed to Haria, in the north, where Manrique spent his last years. After a stroll around Haria we head north to the Mirador del Rio (480m). This spectacular viewpoint carved into the cliff-edge was once an old artillery post, the 'Bateria del Rio'. From here, you can look down at the Chinijo islands.

A tasty three course lunch is then on offer in a typical fishing village on the northeast coast. After lunch you have the choice of visiting either the Green Caves or the Jameos del Agua, both part of the seven kilometre long lava tunnel that was created by the volcano La Corona. The Green Caves where locals used to hide from pirates and slave hunters, are beautifully lit, thanks to the input of architect Jesus Soto.

The Jameos del Agua, home to the blind albino crab only found on Lanzarote, has an underground pathway running alongside the lagoon. There are also gardens, an auditorium, museum and café at the Jameos.

The Cactus Garden, created on the site of a quarry, has concentric terraces of cacti from Africa, America and the Canary Islands. This was the last of the cultural centres opened by Manrique in 1990. To round off the day is a visit to the César Manrique Foundation where the artist created his home around five volcanic bubbles. The Foundation also has a permanent exhibition of some of Manrique's canvases and architectural designs.

You will be back at your pick up points by 18.00.
