September on Lanzarote is the month when one of the most important island festivals takes place. And to help celebrate the Fiesta of Dolores, the Virgin of the Volcanoes, a handicrafts market will be running on both Saturday and Sunday, 4th and 5th September at the Monumento al Campesino.
The market will feature handmade arts and crafts items as well as the traditional costumes worn by Lanzaroteños during the Romeria of Los Dolores, which sees thousands of island residents and tourists walking to Mancha Blanca on September 15th. The pilgrimage is to give thanks for the miracle of Dolores, who reputedly stopped the lava flows reaching her village through prayer.
The market will also play host to an exhibition of the Mythology of Princesa Ico, the last Guanche princess who lived on Lanzarote. This show is composed of ceramics created by local craftsman Juan Brito. Entrance to the market is free, but there is also a special menu of sancocho (fish stew), morcillas (blood sausage) and a dessert of fried milk and honey being served at the restaurant of the Monumento al Campesino for €14. 95 per person.
