The Cactus Garden in Guatiza celebrates its twentieth anniversary on Saturday 25th September, with an evening of musical entertainment and an open door policy during the day. The attraction was the last of the seven Centres of Art and Culture to be created by island born artist, César Manrique and first opened its doors in 1990.
Since then, the Cactus Garden has grown to maturity with some 1,400 species of cacti plantedhroughout the amphitheatre styled space, which was converted to its current use from a waste tip, on the site of a former quarry.
During the day an open door policy will be in place for both tourists and residents alike to tour the gardens without paying the entrance fee. The doors open at 10.00 and close at 18.00. There will also be a drawing competition for children to participate in throughout the day.
The evening´s entertainment will feature several of the best Spanish opera singers, with Three Tenors and a Soprano performing from 21.00. The garden will be lit with a special arrangement of nocturnal illumination which should further enhance the atmosphere. Tickets to attend this gala cost €20 each and are available from the ticket office at the Cactus Garden and at the other main Centres of Art and Culture.
