The eighth annual Marlin Fishing tournament arrives at Marina Rubicon, Playa Blanca next month, the only qualifying stage of this competition before the IGFA Offshore World Championship which takes place at Cape San Lucas in Mexico next year.

The Lanzarote leg of this tournament is scheduled for 16th to 18th September, with a maximum of 57 boats allowed to participate. Many aficionados of this type of sport fishing are expected to arrive from the other Canarian Islands, mainland Spain and abroad to take part.

Participants are expected to comply with strict technical criteria in order to ensure that the marlin are returned to the sea, after their capture, as little damaged as possible. In order to fulfill this low impact fishing, a specific circle fishing hook is recommended by the event organizers. To encourage the sportsmen taking part to use this method, extra points will be awarded for fish caught in this way.

Each team will be fishing for eight hours on each of the first two days of the competition, between 09.00 and 17.00. In order for the judging to accurately reflect the performance of competitors, each fish will be photographed and videoed before it is released again. The judges will use the photographic and video documentation to assess the weight and size of each catch.
