A new exhibition of photographs entitled ‘Hombres de Barro’ or ‘Men of Mud’ opens this week at the El Aljibe gallery space in the Plaza de la Constitución in Haria. Featuring the work of Alby Martin Placeres, the images focus on a modern interpretation of local island farming culture.

Many of the models that Alby Martin photographed are locals of Haria, whom the artist portrays as sons of the earth in reference to the importance that agriculture has played for families on Lanzarote.

Using clay and mud to illustrate the ongoing relationship that residents have with the environment, Alby Martin has created a range of images exploring this theme. The works are either mounted on canvas or have been back-lit as photo montage. The exhibition is the culmination of over a year´s work by the artist, with the vast majority of the images created in Lanzarote, using local families as models.

‘Hombres de Barro’ or ‘Men of Mud’ opens on 10th September and runs until 30th September. The gallery is at basement level, with a staircase leading down from the entrance in the square. Opening times are between 10.00 and 13.00 on Monday to Friday and between 10.00 and 14.00 on Saturday.
