The streets of Lanzarote´s main resort, Puerto Del Carmen, will be resounding to pounding feet and driving beats tomorrow, Saturday October 31st, as the first ever Music Marathon Festival gets underway. Taking place along the main Avenida de las Playas from 14.00.
The event is the brainchild of Kenneth Gasque –who was also behind the creation of Lanzarote´s best known sporting event The Iron Man and more recently the first inaugural Wine Run. And it is ultimately designed to raise money for a number of charities, such as local animal rescue service Sara and international causes such as Ninos del Tercer Mundo.
The Music Marathon effectively encompasses a number of different events all aimed at different age groups and levels of ability. The main half marathon is open to over 18 year old only –requiring 8 loops of the main course and covering a total distance of just over 21 km. A quarter marathon which is open to 16-18 year olds, measuring just over 10km. A kids race for 10 to 16 year olds covering two loops of the circuit and a junior race for 4 to 9 year olds with a distance of 800 metres. With a maximum finish time for al entrants of 2 hours and 45 minutes.
The event isn´t just for runners alone either – as walkers, skaters and wheelchair users can also join in and complete one loop of the circuit. All to the accompaniment of some of Lanzarote´s leading live acts, including the Mick James Band, the Nauty Boyz, The Tareaways and tribute rockers HeySee/DC. Who will be performing at various points along the race route – which extends from the Los Fariones Hotel along the main Avenida in the direction of the San Antonio Hotel and Los Pocillos (which will be closed to traffic from 06.00 to 18.00). The Mersey sounds of the Beatles tribute act Los Bootles will also be headlining the event after-party and concert – which kicks off at 21.00 at the main plaza outside the Los Fariones Hotel.
All entrants are issued with a timing chip which records their progress and which is then handed in at the end of the event. And the Music Marathon Festival is open to all – tourists included (although it is important to note that pre-registration is required.
