The annual series of candle mass concerts held at the Cueva de Los Verdes in the north of the island get underway this Saturday. As this atmospheric venue plays host to a recital from eminent British musicians Robin Colvill and John Morgan.

Musica Candelaria is now entering its seventh year and the coming event programme features some of the best known names from the world of contemporary classical music. Such as pianist Robin Colvill and the baritone John Morgan, who will be getting this years series of concerts underway at the Cueva de Los Verdes, this coming Saturday 15th at 21.00.

Tickets for the event cost €15, with residents enjoying a discounted price of €12. And are available from the Tourist Offices in Playa Blanca, Puerto del Carmen and Costa Teguise. As well as from the Cueva de Los Verdes box office, Luna Records and the El Almacen Cultural Centre in Arrecife.

Robin Colvill


Robin Colvill
Robin Colvill is one of the most popular and in demand British pianists on the world music stage today. Noted for his creative and imaginative programming as well as the diverse nature of his engagements – as Robin has recently performed at the 3000 seat capacity Havana Opera House, the Governor’s Residence in Gibraltar and Festung Castle in Salzburg. And will now be bringing his talents to the equally unique setting of the Cueva de Los Verdes.

Since his student days at the Royal College of Music in Scotland and the Academia Chigiana in Siena, Italy Colvill has worked both at home and abroad with some of the classical music worlds leading lights. Such as Nigel Kennedy, Jacqueline du Pre and the celebrated French violinist Isabelle Flory. As well as performing as a guest artist with eminent ensembles such as the Salzburg String Sextet and the Paris Arpeggione Quartet.

Colvill has also generated considerable media interest thanks to some innovative musical adventures, such as his re-enactment of the Liszt Grand Tours of 1840/1841. When Colvill performed in all of the 73 different towns and cities that played host to Liszt, still widely regarded today as the worlds leading pianist, when he visited Great Britain in the 19th Century.

John Morgan


John Morgan is one of Britain’s most distinguished baritones, renowned for his “big strong dark-timbered voice” which has been the foundation stone of a highly succeful international career. Encompassing regular performances at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden and for the English National Opera.

London born Morgan first came to prominence after studying at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama via his success in the Luciano Pavarotti Competition in Modena, which led to a string of concert engagements throughout Europe.

He has performed over fifty different operatic roles, encompassing most of Verdi’s classic characters, such as Scarpia in Tosca, Iago in Otello and Marcello in La Boheme. As well as appearing under the aegis of most of the worlds leading classical conductors.

All events are staged at the Cueva de Los Verdes and cost €15, with residents enjoying a discounted price of €12. Performers are on stage at 21.00 – but it can take some time to seat spectators as they wind their way through the tunnels at the Cueva. So it’s advisable to arrive for any performance by 20.30.
