Drum enthusiasts should make their way to the park by the Cabildo building in Arrecife on Saturday evening for an improvised percussion session. Apart from live music there will also be juggling and dancing. The event is open for anyone to participate, so take your instrument with you or just join in when you get there.
The focal point for the evening´s entertainment will be in the area by the cafeterĂa in the park, from 21.00 onwards until 02.00 in the morning. The organisers hope there will be a chance to create a fusion of rhythms as different instruments and styles merge together.
Percussive groups are extremely popular on Lanzarote, with several Batucada teams regularly battling out their skills on the drums. Batucada makes its biggest contribution to local fiestas at Carnaval time, when groups of up to twenty drummers form part of the processions in each town.
Hours of training and practice go into this style of music, with teams meeting at least once a week in the build up to Carnaval to perfect their skills. Spectators often find the level of energy created by percussive groups extremely infectious.
