The annual multimedia event Urban Fest celebrates all aspects of urban culture and touches down in Arrecife from August 20th to 22nd. Featuring a whole raft of live music from acts such as the Pinkertones, exhibitions, skateboarding and wind surfing demos, workshops and much much more besides.
Urban Fest 2010 largely takes place in and around the Recinto Ferial, opposite the main Cabildo building in Arrecife. And falls loosely under the banner of the Fiesta de San Gines, which is one of the major annual festivals in the island’s capital.
Event Programme
Live music forms the main focus of the evening’s entertainment on each of the three nights, with the following bands playing in the main Recinto Ferial.
Friday 20th August
21.30 Guadalupe Plata are a group of musicians who explore the blues with a stage show that has elements of Voodoo and a pernicious sound.
22.30Los Coronas take to the stage with their spaghetti western style which is fused with surfing references as well.
24.00 Sex Museum have been performing and making music for 15 years and now have something of a national following in Spain.
Saturday 21st August
21.30 Zurych are a rock band who have been particularly influenced by British rock and they’ll be playing from their most recent release ‘From the Ashes’.
22.30Fuel Fandango play an eclectic style of dance music which combines rock, funk and flamenco.
24.00 The Pinker Tones are well established and have built quite a following for their music which draws elements of pop, bossa nova, soul, funk, breakbeat, swing and lounge music together.
Sunday 22nd August
22.00Alma Sin Dueño are amongst the most well established Canarian rap groups, producing their own brand of hip hop.
23.00Shotta is a renowned hip hop MC and performer in Spain, much lauded for his creative lyrics and style.
Workshops covering a whole range of activities are programmed for the three days of the event:
Skate
10.00 – 12.00 Would be skateboarders can practice their skills on a half pipe ramp under the tutelage of ex professional skater in Argentina, Diego Rosende. Anyone who wishes to get involved should come equipped with pads and other protective gear. Taking place at the mini ramp.
Wind Surf
11.00 – 13.00 This workshop covers both theory and practice on dry land with Raul Rodado, an experienced instructor of the sport. Taking place in the large workshop tent and on the main esplanade.
Rock Climbing
09.00 – 13.00 and 17.00 – 21.00 An opportunity to practice rock climbing at the Rockodromo under the watchful eye of Miguel Caballero, coordinator of Adventure Lanzarote.
Graffiti
09.00 – 11.00 A chance to decorate some of the perimeter walls surrounding the Urban Fest with graffiti art, which is being directed by Fernando Robayna.
Modern Percussion
10.00 – 12.00 This workshop is taking place in the large pavilion and will be led by Artemis Espino, a music teacher who has specialized in percussion.
Fingerboard
11.00 – 13.00 Table-top skating led by Argentinian professional Diego Rosende in the main pavilion.
Street Dance
11.00 – 13.00 Introductory level workshop in hip hop and break dancing, with a different style of dance on each of the three days. Friday sees a session in Krump from Omar Asaidi, on Saturday there will be a Break Dance class by Ayoze Rijo and on Sunday Hip Hop from Tony Biyang. These classes will be taking place outside the main pavilion.
Numerous shows and exhibitions are also part of the Urban Fest programme.
BMX and Skaters
09.00 – 21.00 Each day there will be shows local BMX riders, skateboarders and rollers.
Street Dance
18.00 – 19.00 on Friday. This hour long show of street dancing has been put together by the local collective Fashion School.
Street Dance Competition
18.00 – 19.00 on Saturday. Open to anyone to participate. Interested parties should enroll in the competition twenty minutes before it begins.
MCing Contest
17.00 – 20.00 on Sunday. A battle on the microphones between El Shark and El Calidad.
