It’s Carnaval time on Lanzarote this month. As one of the most colourful celebrations in the calendar sweeps across the island. With all of the action kicking off in the capital city of Arrecife from tomorrow.

This year’s event is sure to be a real Thriller – as Michael Jackson is the official theme of the Arrecife 2010 Carnaval. And the capital city is the place to head for if you are keen to sample a truly authentic slice of Carnaval Canarian style.

With loads of events taking place across Arrecife – concentrated in the Recinto Ferial (next to the Ayuntamiento building), Zone Parque Ramirez Cerda (the seafront park at the foot of Calle Leon Y Castillo) and the area in and around the El Almacen Cultural Centre.

There’s a whole raft of events building up the main event from February 5th such as the Fiesta Infantil, children’s fiesta, at the Recinto Ferial on Sunday the 7th and the Concurso de Murgas – a selection of musical plays – taking place from Monday 8th. However the key dates are:

Saturday 13th Feb 21:30 Carnival Queen’s Grand Gala. Recinto Ferial
Sunday 14th Feb17:00 Great Children’s Party with several shows and contests for children, Recinto Ferial. 21:30 Drag Queen Election and ‘Nancy Rubias’ show, Recinto Ferial
Monday 15th Feb17:00 Grand Carnival Parade. Starting at the Ciudad Deportiva and ending at the Cabildo building
Tuesday 16th Shrove Tuesday. 20.00 Batucada Show at the Recinto Ferial
Wednesday 17th Feb18:00 The “Entierro de La Sardina� – The Burial of the Sardines. The procession starts from the Fisheries College and ends at the park in front of the Cabildo building with fireworks.

There are also plenty of live bands and DJ´s performing in the capital this year too from the 12th to the 17th in and around El Almacen and in the Zona House at the Recinto Ferial. Including big name turntablists from across the Canaries, Barcelona and Cadiz.

Carnaval Puerto del Carmen
After Arrecife Carnaval then heads for the islands largest tourist resort – Puerto del Carmen. Which is a great spot for holidaymakers to join in the fun.

Thursday 18th Feb 21:00 Several Shows: Charanga ‘Los Gruñones’, Batucada ‘Chimbay’, Murga ‘Las Revoltosas’ and ‘Timanfeiros’ Comparsa, at Avenida de Las Playas. From 22.30 Verbena (open-air dance) with the ‘Mambo Bueno’ band, at the Avenida de Las Playas.
Friday 19th Feb 21:00 Grand Carnival Gala and Great Verbena (open-air dance) with shows by las Comparsas ‘Guaracheros’, ‘Sur Caliente’ y ‘Danzarines Canarios’ de Tenerife, at the Avenida de Las Playas. Later there are shows by ‘Malibú Band’ and ‘DJ Nandy’
Saturday 20th Feb 17:00 Grand Carnival Parade along the promenade, from Barcarola Club Apartments to the Fariones Playa Aparthotel. From 21:00h. Great Verbena (open-air dance) with ‘Suso y Familia, ‘Rika Banda’ y ‘Los Conejeros’ until dawn.
Sunday 21st Feb 18:00 Children’s Carnival, at ‘Union Sur’ Society, Tías.

Festival de Musica Canarias :: Prague National Chamber Theatre Orchestra


The renowned musicians of the Prague National Chamber Theatre Orchestra will be appearing in the atmospheric surroundings of the Convento de Santo Domingo in Teguise this Saturday the 6th of February. As part of the 26th annual Festival de Musica Canarias. Which brings some of the biggest names in contemporary classical music to the islands every year.

The Prague National Chamber Theatre Orchestra close the even on Lanzarote this year and will be o stage from 20.30.

Tickets are priced at €15 for all of the concerts are available from the resort Tourist Information offices, the Cultural Department of Teguise Ayuntamiento, at Café Jaleo in Teguise, the box office at the Cueva de los Verdes and the Casa de la Cultura Benito Perez Armas in Yaiza.
