Fiesta De Los Dolores :: Mancha Blanca

Romeria de los Delores
One of the island’s largest annual fiestas takes place this month on Saturday 11th September. Thousands of locals can be seen every year walking across the island from their homes and villages to celebrate the miracle of Dolores at Mancha Blanca.

Many still undertake this pilgrimage in traditional dress, accompanied by shopping trolleys packed with food and drink for the journey.

The miracle of the Virgin of the Volcanoes was that a local girl, called Dolores, prayed for the encroaching lava flow to stop before it engulfed her village. When her prayers were answered, the island population quickly began to believe that a miracle had been performed and as a result, thanks are given every year for this event.

The effigy of Dolores is taken out of the church at Mancha Blanca to form the focal point of the pilgrimage procession. After she has been returned to the altar there is a huge party in Mancha Blanca with live music, numerous stalls selling food and drink and dancing until dawn.
