Tourists who are keen to get in touch with the more traditional musical styles of Lanzarote can take their choice of a trio of events this coming weekend at a string of concerts taking place across the island.
Friday 15th – Acatife : Convento Santa Domingo, Teguise
The Canarian folklore group Acatife get the weekend underway as they showcase their traditional stylings in the atmospheric surroundings of the Convent Santa Domingo in the former island capital of Teguise. Formed in 1992 Acatife seek to keep the flame of Canarian folk music alive by religiously reproducing the musical styles of their forefathers, as well as traditional folk costumes too. The event gets underway from 21.30 and entrance is entirely free of charge.
Sunday 16th – Terekitetap : Timple House Museum, Teguise
Also taking place in Teguise this weekend is a performance by Terekitetap who promise a slightly more contemporary take on traditional musical styles when they perform live at the Timple House Museum (formerly the Palacio Spinola) in the main square of the Plaza De Constitucion in Teguise.
The timple is the traditional string instrument of the Canaries, essentially a small guitar or ukulele and the Terekitetap trio, comprising Jonathan Rodriguez, Jep Melendez and Fatima Rodriguez will be taking their audience on a musical journey as they explore numerous traditional themes from around the seven islands, fused with elements of flamenco. Tickets cost €8 and the event starts at midday. You can find out more about the band by visiting their official website.
Sunday 16th – Alexis Lemes : Bodega Stratvs, La Geria
More timple based musical action takes place at Bodega Stratvs in La Geria on Sunday 16th when Lanzarote born Alexis Lemes appears alongside Angie San Esteban on vocals and Alex Jansenn on guitar. The trio will be performing jazz infused timple tunes and entrance costs €8, which includes some free samples of various Bodega Stratvs wines and cheeses from the nearby Finca de Uga. The event starts at 20.30.
