Pop Art Opens At Los Aljibes
Visitors to the island have the rare chance to visit one of Cesar Manrique’s lesser known architectural works on Lanzarote this month when a new exhibition showcasing the work of the eminent Catalan graphic designer José María Albanell gets underway at the Los Aljibes gallery in Tahiche from this Friday August 10th.
Entitled Pop Art the exhibition showcases Albanell’s work, which over the years has encompassed the creation of eye catching concert posters for some of the biggest names in music, such as Eric Clapton and Bob Dylan, as well as national press campaigns for leading brand names such as Donna Karan.
Los Aljibes started life as a water deposit and was originally transformed by Manrique into a restaurant, first opening to the public in 1976. Over time though it feel into disuse and is only now being revitalised as an exhibition space.
The site boasts many of the local artist’s trademark design flourishes and is ideally suited to hosting exhibitions thanks to its large vaulted central gallery. It is also located just a short walk from the Cesar Manrique Foundation, just past the roundabout - which is home to his famous Phobos wind toy - in the direction of Costa Teguise. Pop Art runs until September 10th and is entirely free of charge.
