The total number of passengers arriving on flights to Lanzarote rose for the fourth consecutive month during February. According to the latest figures released by AENA – who recorded a 5.3% increase in passenger airport traffic last month.

AENA´s latest arrival figures reveal that total passenger numbers increased by 5.3% last month versus the same month in 2009. Making this the fourth month in a row when the number of arrivals to the island have risen.

The councillor for tourism at the Cabildo de Lanzarote, Luis Arraez stated that this increase in visitor numbers was hopefully a reflection of the work being done by the Tourist Board and the Society for the External Promotion of Lanzarote (SPEL).
In addition, Arraez mentioned that the figures could have been even better in February if a number of flights had not been cancelled due to the bad weather.

During the last three months the statistics reveal that increases have been registered, with 6.39% more visitors in December (compared with 2008), a rise of 1.73% in January and now an increase of 5.3% in February. Making a total of 44, 387 more visitors during this three month period than during the same period of 2008-2009.

Furthermore, due to agreements reached in January in relation to increased seat availability and capacity of up to 25% over the coming summer months, it is hoped that tourist numbers will continue to improve throughout the year.

However it is also important to view these postive gains in context. As November and December 2008 and January and February 2009 were four of the weakest months for tourist arrivals in recent years. Thanks to the impact at that time of the economic crisis.
