Occupancy levels in Lanzarote hotels and apartment complexes fell to a new all time record low during the month of May. According to figures just released by the islands hoteliers association ASOLAN.

According to the latest numbers from ASOLAN only 49.10% of the islands tourist beds were occupied last month. A fall of 22.35% on figures for May 2008 and a decline of 19.84% on April this year. Making this the lowest occupancy figure ever recorded on Lanzarote in over forty years.

The ASOLAN statistics suggest that the figures for overall tourist arrivals for May – which will be released later this month – will also reveal that visitor numbers to the island continue to decline.

Up until the end of April this year total foreign tourist visits fell by just over 15%, according to AENA, the Spanish airport authority. With British visitor numbers down by 16.14% during the first four months of this year. Equivalent to 47,409 fewer visitors arriving on flights to Lanzarote from the UK
