The number of tourist beds filled in Lanzarote hotels and apartment complexes rose by 4% last month. According to new figures just released by ASOLAN, the island hoteliers association. As occupancy levels hit 70.35% during February. Up from 66.36% for the same month last year.
Occupancy levels in Lanzarote´s hotels and apartment complexes rose for the second consecutive month this year during February. As the number of beds filled rose by 4% last month.
Of the islands main resorts Costa Teguise enjoyed the highest occupancy levels during February, with 73.45% of hotel and apartment complex beds filled. Followed closely by Playa Blanca – with an overall occupancy level of 73.36%. Lanzarote´s largest resort – Puerto del Carmen – trailed in third place – with 68.38% of tourist beds filled. Whilst rural hotels enjoyed an increased occupancy level of 58.49%, up from 48.92% in 2009.
These positive figures must be viewed in context however – as February 2009 was a particularly weak month for the islands tourist industry. As occupancy figures then were down by 10.61% versus February 2008, when the number of beds filled reached 76.97%. This indicates that whilst the islands tourist industry is recovering it still has some way to go before being restored to pre-crisis levels.
Indeed the impact of the economic crisis ensured that 2009 was the worst year on record for the islands hotels and apartment complexes – with occupancy averaging out at just 65% for the year. A figure down by 8% on 2008.
Whilst overall, hotel and apartment occupancy levels have been declining steadily on Lanzarote over the last decade, from a high water mark of 89% recorded in 1999.
