The price of last minute package holidays in Lanzarote and other popular overseas destinations has tumbled in recent weeks, according to a survey conducted by Co-Operative Travel. Which reveals that deals to some destinations are now available at reductions of up to 34% versus 2009 prices.

The Co-op survey suggests that short haul holidays are down by nearly a quarter of a million bookings in the UK. Thanks to the combined impact of the recession, the volcanic ash cloud crisis and the sterling-euro exchange rate. Forcing large travel companies and tour operators to slash their prices in order to tempt British tourists out of a staycation and to fill airline seats and foreign hotel beds instead.

Last minute Holidays in Greece in particular have fallen the most sharply in price – with the Co-Op reporting savings of close to £800 versus 2009 prices for families of four booking a week in Paphos and just over £450 on holidays in Crete. Whilst amongst the Canary Islands holidays in Fuerteventura are also now available on the cheap – with savings of over £400 on offer.

According to the Co-op the average price of a seven night summer holiday in Lanzarote for a family of four has also fallen by 13%, down from £1460 in 2009 to £1270 this year.
