The Port Authority of Las Palmas has given its approval for the official announcement of a public competition for the construction and exploitation of a sports marina and a leisure area within Puerto Naos in Arrecife.

The Authority’s decision will allow a private initiative to be proposed for the development of this concession in a public area. The new president of the Cabildo, Pedro San Ginés, expressed his enormous satisfaction with the announcement made last Friday.

San Ginés commented that this initiative would give the port infrastructure a necessary lift, bringing further benefits to the social and economic sectors of the capital which will be extremely welcome.

The project will give Lanzarote a sports marina to rival those on other islands and in the words of the president of the Port Authority, Javier Sánchez-Simón, will convert the area of Arrecife into possibly the most important of its type in the Canaries, providing a focal point for the winter season of larger yachts.

The competition will complement the works currently underway to amplify the cruise ship area of Arrecife harbour, whose first phase has an approximate budget of 17 million euros.
