Whilst Lanzarote has not been nearly as seriously affected by the storms that swept though the Canary Islands over the last couple of days as larger islands like Tenerife these events have still caused a large amount of disruption for tourists. With eleven flights to Lanzarote diverted to Fuerteventura yesterday. And three ferries unable to dock at Puerto Marmloes in Arrecife.

The stormy weather that has hit the Canary Islands since Monday caused eleven flights due to land on Lanzarote to be diverted to Fuerteventura yesterday. This was the result of extremely high gusts of wind that made it impossible to land at Arrecife airport for flights from mainland Spain and other European departure points.

However, the Canarian flight operator, Binter, was able to operate without experiencing the same difficulties, as a result of the different size planes used by the company. It is hoped that passengers who have been diverted will be able to board flights to Lanzarote once the airport is reopened to air traffic.

Three ferries were also unable to dock at Puerto Mármoles due to dangerous sea conditions. These included a Transmediterranea ferry due to dock yesterday from Cadiz and a ferry from the Armas fleet proceeding from Gran Canaria. The latter ferry docked at Puerto el Rosario in Fuerteventura in the end, shuttling passengers by bus to Corralejo to join a ferry over to Playa Blanca.

Also in the news yesterday was the discovery of a dead whale, measuring four metres in length, in the coastal waters of Playa Blanca. The cause of death is unknown at present, although a representative from the Whale and Dolphin Museum at Puerto Calero commented that the mammal did not appear to have suffered an attack by other animals and appeared to have died at least a week ago.

The current spell of bad weather is expected to dissipate over the course of today. Tourists can check live Lanzarote flight arrivals and depatures information and the weather forecast for Lanzarote over the coming days
