January is a major month for musical events on the island. As the 25th Canarian Music Festival continues apace, alongside the Musicae Candelaria series of concerts – which are being staged at the atmospheric venue of the Cueva de los Verdes.
Chamber Orchestra of Tenerife
On Saturday 17th January, the Chamber Orchestra of Tenerife will be performing at the Cueva De Los Verdes, as part of the Musicae Candelaria season.
The Orchestra has previously performed in high profile venues across Europe pleasing crowds with their recitals of the works works of Vivaldi and Holzt. Tickets are available from the ticket office at the Cueva De Los Verdes and at the Tourist Information Centres in Puerto del Carmen, Costa Teguise and Playa Blanca. Tickets cost €15 and the concert starts at 21.00.
Gustavo Diaz-Jerez
The eminent Canarian pianist Gustavo Díaz-Jerez will be performing a solo concert at the Cueva De Los Verdes on Monday 19th January as part of the 25th Canarian Music Festival.
Originally from Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Díaz-Jerez has carved out a name for himself on the classical piano circuit, playing pieces by Liszt, Rachmaninov and Mozart amongst others.
He has won several coveted international prizes, including the Manhattan School of Music Concert Competition, the Viña del Mar de Chile and the ‘Paloma O’Shea’ International Piano Competition.
A student of the Manhattan School of Music, he has won acclaim internationally, performing in New York, Chile, Australia and across Europe and is lauded for his own compositions as well as his interpretation of numerous renowned piano conciertos.
The concert starts at 20.30 hours and tickets are available from the ticket office at the Cueva De Los Verdes, the Tourist Information Offices in all three resorts and also from El Almacén in Arrecife. Price €15.
Mariinsky Theatre Choir
The Mariinsky Theatre Choir from St Petersburg in Russia will be performing on Saturday 17th January as part of the 25th Canarian Music Festival. The rich choral tradition of the country has developed over several centuries, with contributions from Tchaikovsky and Rimsky-Korsakov.
The Mariinsky Theatre was established in 1860 as a permanent opera company, within which the choir formed one of the most important components. The choir will be appearing at the Convento de Santo Domingo in Teguise from 20.30. Tickets are €15 and are available from the Tourist Information Centres and El Almacén in Arrecife. The concert begins at 20.30.
Ensemble Andalusí
At the end of the month, the Ensemble Andalusí de Tetuan will be performing at the Tias Theatre.
The group are known for exploring the influences of the Arabic world on Spanish music, as a result of the Moorish occupation of southern Spain between the 13th and 14th centuries.
This is another concert arranged under the auspices of the 25th Canarian Music Festival and takes place on 31st January at 20.30. Tickets cost €15 and are available at the outlets already mentioned.
Cool Notes At Jazz Mi Madre
For something a little more contemporary head for the Costa Teguise based jazz club, Jazz Mi Madre this month as there are sessions scheduled for virtually every night of the coming month.
On Monday 12th, 19th and 26th Tony Brown will be playing, whilst on Tuesday 13th, 20th and 27th the music is brought to you by Gabriel and Kakinha. Wednesday 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th features John Pick and every Thursday will see live jam sessions.
On Friday 9th and Saturday 17th Afrika United are appearing, with other live acts such as Cabeza de Perro scheduled for Saturday 10th and Rising Sun on Saturday 24th January.
Jazz Mi Madre can be found in CC Calipso, just off the main Avenida de las Islas Canarias in the heart of Costa Teguise. The full range of jazz, fusion, swing, funk and blues is covered by the live acts and DJs playing at the venue.
