Puerto del Carmen Flies Four Blue Flags
Which resort in Lanzarote has the most Blue Flag beaches? Puerto del Carmen once again holds that title as the island´s most popular tourist destination boasts more pristine playas than any other municipality in the entire Canary Islands, bar San Bartolomé de Tirajana in Gran Canaria, which was also recently awarded four Blue Flags.
The beaches of Puerto del Carmen have once again had their blue flag status renewed - with Playa Grande, Playa Chica and the beaches at Los Pocillos and Matagorda all now flying the coveted Bandera Azul for another 12 months.
The European blue flag is awarded for beaches which satisfy strict standards of sanitation as well as meeting criteria for accessibility and security. And in particular, the cleanliness of the coastal waters is one of the most important contributory factors in assessing suitability for an award.
The mayor of Tias, José Francisco Hernández, expressed his satisfaction that all the beaches in Puerto del Carmen had once more been awarded Blue Flag status, as they are of course key to the resort´s continined popularity. He thanked local residents and tourists alike for appreciating the necessity of keeping the coastal areas clean and well cared for.
There are 48 Blue Flag beaches across the seven Canary Islands. Tenerife is home to 16 of them, Gran Canaria 13, Lanzarote 6, Fuerteventura 5, La Palma 4 and La Gomera 1.
