High Winds and Rain Lash Lanzarote
The Emergency Serviceson Lanzarote were called out 26 times during Sunday night, as a result of the heavy downpours and high winds caused by yesterday’s storm. Several streets in Arrecife flooded during the course of the night and storm drains couldn’t carry the excess water away quickly enough.
Access to the capital was temporarily denied when service roads from San Bartolomé and Tahiche had to be closed, due to an excess of water on the tarmac. Trees and electric cables were also brought down, cutting power supplies to some homes in Calles Doctor Fleming and Garcia Escamez in Arrecife.
The other islands across the Canarian archipelago were also hit by strong winds, with gusts reaching as much as 161 kilometres per hour in Izaña on Tenerife and heavy rainfall leading to school and college closures in all the islands except for Lanzarote and Fuerteventura.
The high winds and rainfall are predicted to continue throughout today and into Tuesday, although the level of precipitation is not likely to reach the levels recorded during Sunday night, when as much as 11.7 mm per cubic litre fell between 02.00 and 03.00 am.
