ROOM BOOM British Tourists Paying 26% More For Hotel Rooms
British tourists are paying 26% more for their hotel rooms here on Lanzarote than in previous years, according to the booking portal Hotels.com. Who have just released the results of their annual European Hotel Price Index poll.
The results reveal that hotel price hikes here were the third highest in Europe during 2016, after Reykyavik and Gran Canaria. With the average cost of a hotel room on Lanzarote rising from £78 pounds in 2015 to £97 pounds per night last year, an increase of 26%.
The price rises in part reflect the impact that Brexit has had on the euro-sterling exchange rate, which has sunk by around 9% since late June. However the hikes are also attributable to the island's growing popularity - as Lanzarote welcomed 2.9 million visitors plus last year, 1.34 million of whom flew in from UK airports. With hoteliers adjusting their prices upward in order to take full advantage of this rise in demand.
