Sunday 5th September sees the launch of a new triathlon event – the Ocean Lava Triathlon in Puerto del Carmen. This new event has been organised by Kenneth Gasque, who has already proved his commitment to this type of sporting competition by managing Lanzarote´s annual Ironman Triathlon over the last two decades.

The Ocean Lava Triathlon also consists of a swim, cycle ride and run but is a shortened version of the full Ironman. The swim is 1.9 kilometres in length and takes place at Playa Grande in Puerto del Carmen.

The cycle ride covers 90 kilometres, with a course that runs through Yaiza, Las Breñas, El Golfo, Timanfaya, La Geria and Femes, creating a circuit that extends through much of the southern half of the island. Participants then finish the event with a 21.1 kilometre run which consists of two circuits between Puerto del Carmen and Matagorda, using the promenade as the course.

The Ocean Lava Triathlon then culminates in a well deserved party and awards dinner in Puerto Calero, at the Amura restaurant, where it is hoped that friends, family, volunteers and enthusiastic supporters will join the participants to celebrate the day.

The swim commences at 08.00 on the beach of Playa Grande in Puerto del Carmen and the anticipated finishing time is 17.00, although there will undoubtedly be some triathletes who complete the course in a much shorter time. There are five hundred places open this year, with both individuals and relay teams invited to participate. Registration for individuals is €120 whilst teams can subscribe for €200. Discounted rates are available for students and those over 65 years.

As a result of this event, the main avenida in Puerto del Carmen will be closed on Saturday 4th September from 08.00 until 06.00 on Sunday between Calle Guanapay and Calle Doramas. During the event on Sunday the Avenida de las Playas will be closed between 06.00 to 18.00 between Calle Guanapay and Calle Yugoslavia.
