Tenerife is the largest of the seven Canary Islands – as well as famously being home to the tallest mountain in Spain, Mount Teide, which stands 3718 metres high.
The island has also long been a big draw for tourists – attracting nearly 8 million visitors during 2006. Many of these were British holiday makers, lured largely by the islands year round clement climate - with a temperature that rarely falls much below 21c, even in the depths of the Northern European winter.
Tenerife has something of a North-South divide – created by the aforementioned Mount Teide – with distinct microclimates evident in both halves. The North of the island tends to be greener and can often be cloudier – whilst the south benefits from the majority of that glorious year round sunshine.
As a result, tourism has really taken off in the south – where the major resorts of Los Cristianos and Playa Las Americas dominate and where the best beaches can be found. Whilst the north tends to attract an older profile of visitor – with more interest in the cultural aspects of traditional towns and villages such as La Laguna and the fertile Orotava Valley.
Where tourism leads investment tends to follow. And property investment here follows along similar lines. With most overseas investors opting for holiday rentals in an and around the bustling resorts of the South. Whilst retirees and relocaters tend instead to flock to the North.
Property in Tenerife remains good value for money – as prices start from as little as €60,000 and are well below the national average for house prices in Spain. Suggesting plenty of scope for further capital growth.
