PWA World Tour in Costa Teguise

The Professional Windsurfing Association world tour hits Costa Teguise this week from June 30th to July 3rd. With a prize purse of €30,000 up for grabs.

Amongst those taking part in the four day event is last year's winner, Venezuelan Estredo Jose Gollito. Thirty one freestyle board riders have already registered to take part, with British competitor Andy 'Bubble' Chambers battling it out once again following his ranking as joint winner in 17th place alongside a number of fellow participants in 2010.

The action all takes place in the bay at Playa de las Cucharas in Costa Teguise, as this manmade stretch of water offers ideal conditions for practicing windsurfing. As a result, the freestyle event provides plenty of visual entertainment for spectators and holidaymakers who are using the beach.

Between June 30th and 3rd July, the freestyle competitors will demonstrate to the judges their versatility and skills when executing aerial loops, forward rolls and jumps. Some of the more complicated manoeuvres have been named after well-known windsurfers, such as the Funnell, invented by Ricardo Campello after fellow surfer Andy Funnell.

The freestyle heats are anticipated to start at 10.00 every day, but as this sport is weather dependent, there can sometimes be interruptions to the schedule of events. The closing ceremony will be in the early evening on Sunday 3rd July at the Las Cucharas beach
