Mar en Calma Festival in Playa Honda

This coming weekend sees a two day festival of the arts taking place in Playa Honda, the coastal conurbation between Arrecife and Puerto del Carmen. Entitled 'Mar en Calma' or 'Calm Sea' it combines street theatre and live music and is free for all to attend.

This is the fourth year that the Mar en Calma event will be taking place, with numerous activities organized for both Friday 29th July and Saturday 30th. The main focal point for the event will be on the seafront promenade, also known as the Avenida Playa Honda, where it intersects Calle Princesa Ico, which is the main road that leads from Deiland shopping centre to the seafront.

On Friday evening, there will be a theatre performance from Somos at 20.00 which is suitable for the whole family. The comic action centres around the home of Doña Juana, a strange lady who discovers that things keep disappearing from her house. So she calls on the assistance of her good friend the detective to find out exactly what has been going on.

Then from 22.00 the popular Canarian musician Luis Morera will be performing a live concert. Known as something of a poet and with a distinctive sounding voice, Morera will sing some of his unique compositions, which tell of his love for the islands as well as personal reflections on life. Apart from his solo career, Luis Morera has also been long associated with the Canarian group Taburiente.

On Saturday 30th July, the theatre group Espiritus de Sal or 'Spirit of Salt' will be presenting their latest work ¡Cómo Como! This well established theatre company which formed in 2003 combines acting, humour and music with aplomb. Lulu and Pepino have devised a play about cooking which is also informative about diet, a healthy life and country traditions, as well as presenting recipes in an attractive way that should engage both children and adults alike. The play begins at 19.00.

Later on in the evening, the group Treintaytantos will be offering up their latest songs. Following in the pop-rock tradition that has produced many well-known groups in Spain, such as Fito & Fitipaldis and Revolver, Treintaytantos is a Lanzarote based group composed of musicians of several nationalities. The band will take the stage at 22.00.
