A Night of Zarzuela at the Cueva de los Verdes

A recital of Zarzuela, the traditional light opera style of music developed in Spain in the seventeenth century, is taking place at the Cueva de los Verdes tomorrow night, 20th August. Featuring the mezzosoprano Cristina Calvo and the pianist Maria Eugenia Jaubert.

The duo will be performing pieces of music from the repertoires of Chueca and Valverde, as well as Albeniz, Cristobal Halffter, Chapi and Sorozabal, amongst others. Zarzuela is the musical style which combines elements of theatre, opera, dance and gossip and developed two main forms of expression, the Baroque and the Romantic.

Cristina Calvo began her musical studies in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, continuing them in Tenerife at the Superior Conservatory of Music in Santa Cruz. Later she broadened her skills through a course of study in Germany and was taught by Maria Orun and Helmut Lips. She then became a founding member of the vocal quartet 'Nova Vox' and has since performed as a soloist with associations such as the Polyphonic Choir of Las Palmas and the Chamber Choir of Tenerife.

Tickets for the event cost €15 and are available from the ticket offices of all the Centres of Art, Culture and Tourism, such as the Cueva de los Verdes and the Jameos del Agua. The concert begins at 21.00 and those attending will receive a complimentary glass of malvasia wine at the opening reception.
