Music Marathon Festival 2011

The third Music Marathon Festival hits the streets of Puerto del Carmen this coming Saturday 22nd October. The event is open to everyone and participants can choose to run, race in a wheelchair, walk or rollerblade along the route which starts and finishes in front of the Los Cocoteros apartment complex and takes competitors all the way along the Avenida de las Playas.

The entire route of the marathon will be lined with local island bands playing music to entertain and stimulate participants in the event. Those taking part can decide whether to complete a half marathon, quarter marathon or an eighth of the usual twenty-six mile course. There is also a mile and half mile race for children.

The day kicks off at 15.00 with a speech explaining the main aims of the Music Marathon Festival and music from the guest DJ. The first race to get underway is at 16.00 when children, skaters and those completing the one mile race set off. The main half, quarter and eighth of a marathon races begin at 17.30, with awards made to participants from 18.30 onwards.

Amongst those bands participating will be The Mick James Band, The Nauty Boys, The Tareaways, The Rubarboos, the Soul Diva Project and Joy Council. Soloist musicians include Andy Reynolds and Gail O'Donovan.

The emphasis of the event is very much on having fun and to this end a large celebratory concert is planned for 19.30 in the evening once the racing is over. As well as live music throughout the event, there will also be a Sport, Health and Fitness exhibition for those interested in finding out more about activities they can get involved in.
