Malpais 2012 Festival

The annual street theatre festival Malpais returns to the island capital of Arrecife tomorrow with its usual mix of comedy, live music, theatre, workshops and magic shows - all of which will be running throughout the rest of the month. Most of the events take place in and around the centre of Arrecife and are free to attend, with only one or two items on the programme organized in the more formal setting of the Lanzarote Island Theatre.
 

Event Programme

Modern Music Classroom

Amongst the events opening the festival this year will be a Modern Music Classroom, taking spectators through the process of learning music in the outdoor location of La Plazuela, right in the heart of Arrecife. The class gets underway at 12.30 on Saturday 10th March and is free to attend.

Bolina & Bambo Puppet Show

Also arranged for the opening day of the Festival is the comedy puppet performance by Bolina and Bambo. This puppet show is scheduled to start at 13.00 in the Parque Ramirez Cerda on the seafront of Arrecife, just by the El Puente de Bolas.

Olimpiaff

In the evening, a further comedy event takes place in La Plazuela, with the trio Yllana performing a slapstick send up of the Olympics entitled Olimplaff, as each acrobat attempts to gain first place on the podium. This show gets underway at 20.00.

The Perfect State of Being

In the Parque Ramirez Cerda at 19.00 there is the visual comedy of Pierre Pillate, who brings us his show of ´The perfect state of being´. Followed at 21.00 on Saturday 10th by a burlesque performance entitled Shake, Shake, Shake, which involves acrobatic displays using an air box executed by Tony Fumé.

Muu 2

Muu 2 is a comic send up of the Spanish bull fighting tradition and its machismo culture, brought to the Arrecife audience by Yllana, a satirical comedy group first formed in 1991. This event is taking place at the Lanzarote Island Theatre in Arrecife on Thursday 15th March. The show starts at 21.00 and tickets cost €12.

Music School of Lanzarote

The Orchestra and Band from the Music School of Lanzarote will be putting on a free concert to showcase their musical skills on Friday 23rd March from 20.00 onwards in the Parque Ramirez Cerda.

Atlantic Orchestra

Whilst the Atlantic Orchestra, directed by Isabel Costas, are playing on Saturday 24th March at 21.00 and Sunday 25th at 11.45 in the Parque Ramirez Cerda. The Saturday concert will include several pieces taken from West Side Story whilst the Sunday concert will feature a number of rousing polkas which should have the audience tapping their feet in time to the music.

El Gary

El Gary is a puppet show for children, aimed at getting youngsters to stretch their imaginations. This combination of magic, songs and puppets is brought to you by Gary the clown, also known as Walter Dario Garibotto, who will be performing at 18.30 on Wednesday 28th and Thursday 29th March in Argana Alta and La Plaza de la Vega respectively.

Alabama Dixieland

On Saturday 31st the Alabama Dixieland band will be bringing their southern American brand of jazz and New Orlean’s swing to the Parque Ramirez Cerda for a free concert from 19.30 in the evening. The following day, a new interpretation of Hans Christian Anderson´s tale of the Emperor´s New Clothes is scheduled for midday in the Parque Ramirez Cerda, performed by the theatre group Tal Cual Troupe.
