World Press Photo 2012 in Arrecife

The World Press Photo Exhibition 2012 opens next week in Arrecife on 4th August and will be showcasing some of the most striking images taken by photojournalists from around the world over the last twelve months. This year´s exhibition features winning entries from the 55th World Press Photo Contest with subject matter covering some of the most prominent events of 2011.

Amongst the many pictures selected by the jury were several photos taken in the aftermath of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan in March 2011. Swedish photographer Lars Lindqvist managed to capture a picture of a boat resting on the edge of a pier, having been lifted up by the tsunami that rose as high as 10 metres, depositing the vessel as the water swept inland.

Also featured through a variety of images were the uprisings in Libya and Egypt, ranging from protestors taking to the streets to call for President Mubarak´s resignation to the battlefields where rebel forces fought against the regime of Colonel Gaddafi. Yuri Kozyrev, a Russian photographer, won first prize for his image showing a group of rebels using anti-aircraft artillery in RasLanuf.

From India there was the dramatic photo of a leopard attacking a forest warden, taken by SalilBera. The creature launched its attack, having been inadequately tranquilised after an attempt to capture it and take it back to the nature reserve where it lived. In the end, the leopard was killed.

The exhibition is showing at the Municipal Exhibition Salon in CalleAquilino Fernandez, 26, (between the Calle Real and the Charco) Arrecife, from 4th to 24th August. Entrance is free and the gallery is open between 10.00 and 13.00 and 18.00 and 21.00 Monday to Friday and between 10.00 and 13.00 on Saturday.
