Fiesta Of Nuestra Señora del Carmen

The annual fiesta of Nuestra Señora del Carmen gets underway in Puerto del Carmen this Thursday, 2nd August. As in previous years, the festivities open with the streets around the old harbour being dressed in bunting and culminate in the maritime procession on August 11th. With lots of activities taking place in between for both tourists and locals alike.

Nuestra Señora del Carmen is the patron saint of the island’s fishermen and each town and village celebrates this fiesta on different dates in July and August. The festival is particularly well observed in Lanzarote’s largest resort of Puerto del Carmen and throughout the ten days of the fiesta there will be numerous activities taking place in and around the harbour, with the focal point being the maritime procession taking place on Saturday 11th August at 18.00. When the saint´s effigy is taken out of the tiny church in the harbour and launched on a flower-decked vessel into the water.

Live music will form much of the evening entertainment, with performances by local folklore bands, such as ‘Guerma´ and ´Raices´ as well as orchestral pieces by ´KuartaPotencia´ and ´Rika Banda´, beginning on Friday 3rd. A local competition to select ´Miss Puerto del Carmen´ also takes place on Friday 3rd August at 21.30 in the square of the harbour.
