Get Set For The Ocean Lava Triathlon

If you’ve been inspired by the Olympics and fancy a further fix of athletic action then head for Puerto del Carmen this Saturday the 8th September, as Lanzarote’s largest resort plays host to the Ocean Lava Triathlon.

The event is the brainchild of Kenneth Gasque, a prime mover behind the annual Iron Man event and is now in its third year. With athletes able to opt for either a half or quarter marathon course.

The half distance course encompasses a 1.9km swim, with entrants hitting the waves on Playa Grande at 08.00 on Saturday morning. Followed by a 90km cycle, which will take contestants through some of Lanzarote’s most stunning volcanic scenery in the wine region of La Geria, through to El Golfo and then back towards Puerto del Carmen via the Timanfaya National Park. Culminating in a 21.1km run along the Avenida de las Playas and into Los Pocillos.

The quarter distance event follows a course that is essentially a truncated version of the half distance event and will start slightly later at 09.20 on Playa Grande.
Competitors will be battling it out for cash prizes, with the half distance winner walking off with €600 at a special presentation ceremony which will be taking place at La Ola in Puerto del Carmen from 20.00 on the evening of the event.
