Teguise Hosts Lanzarote´s First Home Movie Day

The international festival, Home Movie Day, is being celebrated on Lanzarote for this first time this coming Saturday October 20th in Teguise. As Filmoteca Canarias wheel out their collection of old reels of 8mm, Super 8mm and 16mm home movies, amassed from local residents and institutions over the last couple of years for an open air screening from 19.30 onwards.

Home Movie Day is a community orientated project that first took root in the US. The event is designed to celebrate home movies and amateur film making and encourages residents in towns and cities across the world to share their footage with their neighbours, so providing a vital link to their collective past.

The event has the enthusiastic backing of many leading film directors, such as Martin Scorsese, who stated; “Saving our film heritage should not be limited only to commercially produced films. Home movies do not just capture the important private moments of our family's lives, but they are historical and cultural documents as well.”

Home Movie Day is now in its 12th year and is being celebrated in 17 countries and scores of locations across the world. The Lanzarote event provides both locals and tourists with the opportunity to gain a fascinating glimpse into the island´s recorded past.
