‘New Wave’ Timplista Gabriel Garcia Live in Teguise

The young Lanzarote based timple musician Gabriel Garcia performs live tonight in Teguise at the Casa Museo del Timple (formerly the Palacio Spinola), from 21.00.

The timple is essentially a small guitar or ukulele like instrument and it has long been a bedrock of traditional folk music in the Canaries. Increasingly a younger generation of local musicians are now revisiting and reinterpreting the timple and Gabriel Garcia and his group are in the vanguard of this new wave of performers.

He has been trained by some of the best known timple players on Lanzarote such as Toñín Corujo, Domingo el Colorao y Benito Cabrera and in 2008 picked up the coveted title of best young timple layer in the Canaries. Garica has also staged recitals across Spain in cities such as Granada and Cordoba, where he shared the stage with artists of the calibre such as Carlos Nunez and Maria del Mar Bonet.

If you fancy taking in this fascinating mash up of traditional Canarian music with a thoroughly modern twist tickets cost just €5 and are available from the Casa Museo del Timple as well as the Department of Culture at the Ayuntamiento of Teguise.
