Getting Into The Festive Spirit on Lanzarote

There´s no need to go cold turkey if you´re visiting the island over the festive season and are in search of seasonal cheer. As there are a whole raft of events taking place across the next two weeks, including Christmas markets, carol concerts and nativity scenes.

On Thursday 20th December there are two Christmas concerts, one taking place in the Cine Atlantida by El Charco in Arrecife and the other at the Island Theatre, also in Arrecife. The concert at the Cine Atlantida will feature the Polyphonic Choir of San Gines accompanied by Yanira Martin on the harp. Proceeds from this concert will be given to the island based charity Caritas and will benefit local families struggling to make ends meet at Christmas. Tickets for the concert cost €5 and can be purchased at the Catholic bookshop by the church of San Gines. The event begins at 21.00. The second Christmas concert features the students from the Conservatory of Music in Arrecife and the School of Music. The concert is free to attend and starts at 19.00.

A Christmas market will be taking place every day from Monday 17th December right through to 5th January and including Xmas Eve at the Parque Ramirez Cerda on the seafront of Arrecife. This will feature stalls selling gift items, food stuffs and miscellaneous Christmas goods. The market runs from 9.00 in the morning until 21.00 in the evening.

Also worth looking out for are the many nativity scenes created in most major towns around the island. These are known as Belen, after the Spanish name for Bethlehem and often have idiosyncratic features such as volcanoes in the background of each scene. Some of the most impressive can be found in towns such as Teguise and San Bartolomé.
