Magic Carpets – Lanzarote Celebrates Corpus Christi

Streets around the island will be transformed into a sea of salt this weekend as Lanzarote gets set to mark Corpus Christi, one of its most colourful annual celebrations.

Sea salt was once a major product on Lanzarote and remnants of this industry, such as the Salinas de Janubio, are still visible around the island. And whilst on the mainland and on other islands in the Canaries the celebrations are marked by creating intricate floral designs here on Lanzarote the locals instead create alfombras de sal, or carpets of salt, instead.

The island capital of Arrecife traditionally hosts the biggest and best displays and the city has already taken delivery of some 20 tons of salt which will be transformed into intricate and colourful designs by a wide variety of local organizations, such as resident associations and public sector workers over the course of Saturday June 6th. Before the main celebrations take place on Sunday 7th, when a procession, accompanied by the Lanzarote Symphonic Band, sets out from the San Gines Church close to El Charco at midday.

Similar smaller scale events will also be staged in other municipalities such as Tias, Tinajo and Teguise.
