TAKE TWO It’s Christmas (Again) In Lanzarote

If you wish it could be Christmas every day then this is the ideal time to be visiting Lanzarote. As whilst the festive season in the UK is drawing to a close the island is just gearing up for the arrival of the Three Kings on January 5th, which is the traditional highlight of the celebrations in Spain and many other Latin countries around the world.

The Fiesta del Reyes is interchangeable in the Christian calendar with Epiphany, the 12th Day of Christmas. And in Spain this remains one of the most important days in the festive calendar – not least if you´re a child - as this is when you finally get to unwrap some presents! Fiesta del Reyes marks the biblical adoration of the baby Jesus by the three wise men, or kings, Melchior, Caspar and Balthazar, who followed a star to Bethlehem, bearing gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.

And on Lanzarote the day is marked by processions and celebrations in all of the main towns and resorts on the island, featuring the Three Kings on camels, distributing sweets and small presents to throngs of children.

The largest event takes place in the island capital of Arrecife with the Three Kings arriving by boat at the Marina at midday before the full procession heads off from the Parque Islas Canarias later that day at 18.30. Whilst processions will also be taking place in Playa Blanca from 19.00 and Puerto del Carmen Old Town from 20.30.
