FREE BIRD Lanzarote Celebrates Dia de Canarias

May 30th is one of the most important dates in the calendar in the Canary Islands. As it was on this day in 1983 that the archipelago secured independent and autonomous status from the Spanish mainland, during a process of wider devolution in the post-Franco era.

Arguably the most visible aspect of this annual celebration is the blue, white and yellow of the Canarian tricolour flag, which will be in evidence eerywhere, fluttering on public buildings or reproduced on bunting in local supermarkets. Where staff often disburse free samples of tradtional food and drink whilst wearing full on folk costumes.

There's a whole raft of events planned across the island, but if you're staying in one of the three main resorts then here's where to head for a taste of the action.

Playa Blanca

On Sunday May 29th in the Plaza Nuestra Senora del Carmen there'll be live folklore music from 21.00 and free food and drink tastings. Whilst on Monday May 30th in Calle Limones tourists can enjoy a live performance by the Municipal Band of Yaiza from 10.00 onwards.

Puerto del Carmen

The Old Town Harbour area is the place to head for and there will be activities running here throughtout the weekend. With highlights including a Folklore Festival from 12.00 featuring live music and tradtional costumes and dancing.

Whilst on the day itself there will be yet more celebrations from midday onwards, including demonstrations of traditional locals sports such as Canarian wrestling.

Costa Teguise

The Pueblo Marinero is the main focus of celebrations in Costa Teguise, and on May 30th there'll be live music and market stalls selling traditional Canarian foods from 18.00 to 21.00. Larger scale events will also be taking place in the nearby former capital of Teguise on both Sunday 29th and Monday the 30th.
