WALK THIS WAY Best Foot Forward For Los Dolores

Tourists visiting the island this week can enjoy a taste of one of Lanzarote’s best attended, traditional fiestas as the annual pilgrimage of the Romeria Los Dolores gets underway this coming Saturday September 10th.

Los Dolores is the patron saint of the small village of Mancha Blanca and is also known locally as Our Lady of the Volcanoes. As local folklore has it that during the eruptions at nearby Timanfaya in 1736 an icon of this saint was used to invoke a halt in the tide of lava flowing towards the village.

Either way, whatever it’s provenance there’s no doubting that this is one of the island’s best observed folk traditions. As tens of thousands of locals don traditional dress and their best walking shoes to walk across the island towards Mancha Blanca and an evening of celebration, often accompanied by shopping trolleys packed with vital refreshments!

You don’t have to be a local to take part though as this is a celebration that is open to all, just join the crowds heading in the direction of Mancha Blanca throughout Saturday afternoon.
