CARPET RIGHT Corpus Christi Creations Crystalise

In Lanzarote the religious festival of Corpus Christi is celebrated with carpets created from colourful salt crystals - a spectacle that´s well worth catching in the capital of Arrecife as well as elsewhere around the island.

Corpus Christi celebrates the Eucharist - a major event in the Catholic calendar - and here on Lanzarote the event is marked by the creation of intricate carpets of salt, often depicting key bible scenes. With local residents groups, trade bodies and other associations all getting together each year conjure up their own carpets.

Elsewhere in the Canaries on islands such as Tenerife flowers are often used instead of salt - but here on Lanzarote the latter has always been in much more abundant supply - and was once a staple cottage industry.

Each ´district´or ayuntamiento on the island marks Corpus Christi in similar fashion but the largest display can be found in Arrecife - and these can be viewed from 16.00 onwards on Saturday 17th June - the day before the main religious procession takes place from the church of San Gines close to El Charco on Sunday 18th from 13.00.
