Malpais 2011 Hits Streets of Arrecife

The yearly street theatre festival Malpais is back for its fifth edition, beginning this weekend on Saturday 26th March and running until 16th April. As in previous years, the festival brings diverse forms of street entertainment to Arrecife, including live music, cabaret acts, magic and comedy.

26th & 27th March

Opening the event this year is the Symphonic Orchestra of Las Palmas, with an open-air concert from 21.00 in the Parque Ramirez Cerda on the seafront of Arrecife on Saturday evening, 26th March. The orchestra will be playing an aria from The Magic Flute, which will be sung by soprano singer Judith Pezoa as well as pieces by Tchaikovsky, Brahms, Bizet and Strauss, amongst others.

A second concert by the orchestra and Ms Pezoa will be taking place on Sunday 27th March, also in the Parque Ramirez Cerda from 12.00 onwards and featuring some of the pieces performed during the concert on Saturday evening.

1st April

The theatre group SomoS are appearing on Friday 1st April in the Plaza de Centro Comercial Arrecife from 18.30 with a tragi-comic skit featuring numerous characters whose paths cross on a park bench.

Also performing on 1st April is the Clapso theatre group with a tale about the Language of the Dragon, which features many traditional characters, such as the valient prince and a wicked fairy, which should prove highly entertaining for children. Clapso are appearing in the Parque Ramirez Cerda from 20.30.

2nd April

The Gran Canaria Big Band will be performing at the Parque Ramirez Cerda during the evening of Saturday 2nd April, bringing their interpretation of the swing sound to Arrecife. Formed in 1997, this eighteen piece group have developed their own style based on the sounds created by jazz and swing bands from the forties and fifties.

5th & 7th April

Closer to You

This multidisciplinary collection of performances includes the Argentinian magician/clown Adrian Condo and the visual comedian Niño Costrini, who will both be playing at various locations around Arrecife on 5th, 6th and 7th April. On 5th April, Adrian Condo will appear in the Plaza Simon Bolivar at 18.00 whilst Niño Costrini will be in the Plaza de San Francisco Javier at 19.00.

On 6th April, Adrian Condo will be at the CSC Argana Alta from 18.00 with Niño Costrini appearing in the Plaza Simon Bolivar at 19.00. On 7th April, Adrian Condo will be in the Plaza de San Francisco Javier at 18.00, with Nino Costrini appearing at the CSC Argana Alta at 19.00.

8th & 9th April

Malpais in the Street

Over the weekend of 8th and 9th April there will be a number of street based activities specifically for children, such as workshops and bouncy castles in the Parque Ramirez Cerda. Niño Costrini will be performing his show Humanus Comicus outside the old Cabildo building at 19.00 on 8th April, whilst giant inflatable giraffes will be making the odd appearance in the Calle Real or pedestrian shopping street, throughout the weekend.

On Friday evening from 21.00 there will be live music in La Plazuela, behind the Post Office, from Queque and Vocal 7. Whilst on Saturday evening there will be performances from the Circo Perezoff, an acrobatic circus troupe in the Charco de San Gines from 19.00.

Wonderbrass is a Mallorcan jazz band who will be playing live in the Calle Real at 20.00, whilst Los2Play are an acrobatic team whose gymnastics will impress the crowds from 21.00 in the Charco de San Gines. Closing the evening is Mario Queen of the Circus who combines his love of the band Queen with his own brand of comedy. Mario can be seen in La Plazuela at 22.00.

15th April

On Friday 15th April, the Rock and Roll Star show, featuring Loquillo is organised to take place at the Recinto Ferial, by the Lanzarote Government building. Loquillo and his band have been playing rock and roll for thirty years in Spain and this concert encapsulates the best of his music during this long career.

Tickets cost €10 in advance or €12 on the door and can be purchased from the Ayuntamiento of Arrecife, the Cultural Dept of the Cabildo or at the Tsunami pub on Calle Jose Antonio in Arrecife.

16th April

Closing this year´s Malpais festival is a musical spectacular in the Parque Islas Canarias, in front of the Lanzarote Government building. The music is supplied by group Visitants who plan to accompany their music with a firework spectacle to create a more theatrical atmosphere. The evening is entitled FamdeFoc and is free to attend, with the event planned to kick off at 23.00.
