Top Kiteboarders Converge on Lanzarote

The La Santa Pro Kitesurf Contest will be touching down at Famara next week from April 6th to 10th. Providing locals and tourists alike with the chance to see some of the sports top exponents, such as the Brazilian world champion Guilly Brandao in action.

Next week brings a circuit trial for the Kitesurf PKRA competition to the beach at Famara. Between 6th and 10th April, 45 of the most proficient kite surfers from around the world will be testing their skills on the northwestern coast of Lanzarote.

Amongst those in attendance will be the 2010 world champion of the sport, Brazilian Guilly Brandao. There will also be 20 wildcard competitors who´ve been invited to attend by the organizers to spice up the contest.

Playa de Famara is acknowledged as one of the premier spots in which to practice kite surfing as the combination of waves and prevailing winds create perfect conditions for this acrobatic sport. And as a result kiteboarding has a large and enthusiastic following on Lanzarote.

The annual Spanish Kitesurfing Championship has previously taken place here as well as the Kiteboard World Pro Tour. The PKRA is the Professional Kiteboard Riders Association which kicked off its world cup meetings for 2011 in March in Hua Hin, Thailand and ends in South Africa in December.

As the representative for La Santa Surf, Lorenzo Seis was keen to point out that each year increases the sport's popularity, with greater coverage in the world media of various kite surfing competitions.

The circuit in Lanzarote is amongst the most important dates on the kite surfing calendar, alongside competitions in Dakhla in Morocco, Tenerife, Australia and South Africa.
