It's Carnaval Time...

Tomorrow sees the start of the Carnival season, with the capital of Arrecife opening a month of parades, live music, street parties and more. The theme for the Carnival in Arrecife this year is the Viking World, giving party goers plenty of opportunities to dress up in ancient Scandinavian warrior gear, including skullcaps with horns.

The Arrecife Carnival will be inaugurated by the well known figure Juan Medina, who dresses up as Charlie Chaplin’s early character, Charlot, every year. This ceremony is taking place in the Parque Ramirez Cerda on the seafront of Arrecife on Friday 10th. The festivities then continue all week with the Children’s Carnival held on Sunday 12th and the main Carnival Parade taking place on Monday 20th February. With the Burial of the Sardine, which closes the fiesta, happening on Wednesday 22nd.

The action then moves on to Puerto del Carmen, with the opening day of Carnival here commencing on Thursday 23rd February. This day is dedicated to the Children’s Carnival in the resort and begins at 18.00. The Grand Parade is scheduled for Saturday afternoon, beginning at 17.00 on the Avenida de las Playas. With the closing celebrations in Puerto del Carmen taking place on Sunday 26th. The theme for the Carnival in Puerto del Carmen this year is the Wild West, so you can expect to see plenty of cowboys and indians around the resort.

At the same time as the Arrecife Carnival is taking place, there will also be celebrations in Uga and Las Breñas, between 18th February and Friday 24th, and in San Bartolomé from 11th February to the 24th as well. The San Bartolomé festivities have the Mayan World as their theme this year.

Once March arrives, the Carnival moves to Teguise and Costa Teguise, with the Grand Carnival Parade in Costa Teguise taking place on Saturday 3rd March. Playa Blanca begins its festivities on Friday 9th March with the Parade organised for Saturday 10th and the Children´s Carnival happening on Sunday 11th. The theme in Playa Blanca is Venice, so expect to see plenty of masks similar to those worn in the Italian city.

Tinajo´s Carnival is occurring on 2nd and 3rd March and has 1,001 nights as its main theme for the Parade, which will take place on Saturday 3rd March from 17.00. Finally, Haria and La Graciosa´s celebrations take place between 8th and 11th March (Haria) and 16th, 17th and 18th March (La Graciosa).
